The ultimate entertainment couple, the Bob & Dolores Hope Legacy is one that
few if any in the world can match. The Hope Toluca Lake Estate, given the number
of visits from Hollywood elite as well as political luminaries and even
Presidential visits, has made the home a historic landmark, second only to the
White House itself. The Toluca Lake House on Moorepark began construction in
1938 (when it was still surrounded by a walnut grove) and was completed in 1939.
They officially took residence in 1940. The house has gone under two major
restorations in the 1950's and the 1970's. However, it was constantly being
remodeled or added on to. The joke was that every time Bob went away on tour,
Dolores would add a room. During a Tonight Show interview, Bob was asked if he
would ever consider running for President. He said that he didn't think Dolores
would be willing to move into a smaller house. There are 9 bathrooms (Not
counting the ones in the guest house, servants quarters, the office or the
grounds), 7 Bedrooms (not counting Guest House or servants quarters), a huge
kitchen with an Island the size of many kitchens itself, two huge butler
pantries, three bars, Bob's library/study, the family room, a game room/Dolores
work room, a tremendous living room (that is technically the size of three
regular living rooms), a formal dining room and a staff dining room. There is an
elevator off the foyer and a sweeping staircase in the entry. The views from the
master suite (which is technically 6 rooms with three HUGE walk in closets and
two fireplaces in the bedroom and sitting room) is stunning. The guest house has
two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The grounds include a putting green and two
spots to driving golf balls from, three huge rose gardens (Dolores' passion),
and outdoor olympic swimming pool and an indoor pool and jacuzzi. All this in
addition to the tree lined adjacent property large enough to park 50+
automobiles. The home office building with its 6 rooms for staff and security
(including Bob's amazing office with fireplace, sitting area, display cases, and
writers conference table). Imagine the icons and legends of film and TV (from
Katharine Hepburn and George Burns to Brook Shields and a very young Angelina
Jolie) that have visited, not to mention every President since Ike have been
there, including Nixon's famous arrival by helicopter. Bob once said he had
performed for 11 presidents ... and entertained 8.
